I haven't blogged in a while mainly because Facebook is so easy to keep updated. Our internet is so slow that uploading on my computer takes forever and my phone is so much faster! The Lord blessed us incredibly by the birth of our son number 2.
We signed up again for adoption in July of 2020. We figured Jack took a while so we would go ahead and put our name in the hat because it could take that long again. Well, the Lord had other plans for sure. Late May, we got a call from our agency that we had been matched with a family. This would be a closed adoption- therefore, they didn't want to meet us. His due date was July 19th. I smile as I think about the date. The 19th holds meaning for me and Luke. We lost our other kids on the 19th, were forced to terminate our rights to them on the 19th, Jack was born on the 19th, and this baby's due date was on the 19th. We were at peace over being matched with this little one. Does that mean this journey wasn't a roller coaster? Nope. It was- as they all are I'm sure.
On Thursday, I get a call while having a meeting here at the house that the bio Mom had cancelled her Dr. appointment. She wasn't feeling well, and would just go next week. I didn't really think anything about it because I was having fun meeting with ladies I hadn't seen in forever! Well, later that afternoon, I get another call saying they were going to take her to the Dr. because they thought her water might have broken. I asked what we should do and "just hold put" was the answer. I finished my meeting and straightened the house back up. I didn't really think about what to get out baby-wise, I mean this could take a while right? Before Luke got home, we got another call saying we aren't sure if this is going to go through- they hadn't had time to sign any paperwork, etc....the bio dad might back out, etc. Again- back on the rollercoaster of emotions. This time though, I got out what bottles we had put aside from Jack and laid them on the counter. That was the extent of what I was going to do. If this thing fell apart again, there was no way I was going to have to put up all this stuff- been there and done that....not a fun experience.
Luke got home and we went to dinner at Lost Pizza. Jack spent the entire meal unzipping my purse and taking things out and putting it back in. I really couldn't tell you if the pizza was good or not. In the middle of our meal I get another call and go outside to take it. Kandi tells me that the baby is here. He is doing good. It was a c-section. The bio Mom hadn't signed papers yet as she was still in recovery, and just to continue waiting cause we just didn't know what the outcome would be at this point. I relayed all that to Luke and then he suggested I contact my friend who is going through an adoption too. Her journey has been kinda like ours and she would know exactly how to distract me. Well, Luke dropped me off at the local coffee shop. I ordered a decaf- thank God I didn't need anymore caffeine, and waited on her to get there. We started visiting and hadn't been there 30 minutes when I get another call....come to the hospital as soon as you can. They are ready for you with a room of your own. He's waiting on you.
I call Luke and my friend takes me home. In the meantime I call my friend Tina and ask if she can watch Jack that night. She drops everything and heads on over....she's great like that. Everyone needs a BFF like her- and I'm so thankful to have her in my life. She gets there and helps me pack a bag. We have no idea how long for so we settle on 2 outfits a piece. Thankfully Jack is asleep at this point. Poor Tina has to have a crash course on how to handle the dogs, the cat, and Jack in the span of like 30 minutes. I'm sure her head was swimming. Luke and I load up and head to hospital 3 hours away.
We get to the hospital close to midnight. We check in with the nurse Vanessa and she takes us to room 111. There we wait for our baby. She rolls him in and says, "Here he is." and walks out. We just stared at each other. I immediately pick him up. He is tiny! He weighed 5lbs 13 oz. and is 18 inches long. We unwrap all of his wrinkly goodness and count fingers and toes. He has incredibly long fingers and they are so tiny!
We had already decided on a name- Rhett Andrew. We wanted him to have a middle "A" name like we all do. While talking to my Aunt JJ several weeks ago, she mentioned how she had heard the name Rhett and really liked it. Well it just stuck for me and Luke. Our little Rhett Andrew Williams.
We fed him about 2 and then tried to get some sleep. The nurses came in for paperwork and a few other things to get us settled in. I slept in the hospital bed and kept telling Luke my labor was so hard and I was so sore. I guess our labor was all in journey and emotions. A sweet friend of mine texted me on our way to the hospital. When I told her the 19th thing she mentioned the sweetest thing I had never considered before. I made the comment that we "lost" our kids on the 19th. She told me it wasn't that we "lost" them. The Lord gave them to us for a season, we endured that hard season and held onto our faith, now He was blessing us for our endurance with these two precious babies.
The next day, we spent all day in the hospital room. Luke ran several trips to Walmart. Rhett wouldn't fit in the newborn outfits I brought- they were too big. He got a preemie outfit for him to come home in. He also realized he forgot the head support for our carseat and ended up buying another car seat that would hold him for now but also that he could grow into- so it wasn't a complete waste of money. We ate vending machine food as well as the food the cafeteria brought us. It was a long day. One can only knit, watch TV, and sleep so much. We were discharged about 6:30 that night. We then began the journey home. We stopped once and fed him once and finally were home about 10 that night. We still had a meeting with the social worker we had to get through before Rhett could stay with us. We finished that about 11:30. We were worn out. We got the pack and play out and settled in for the night.
The next morning (Saturday) Jack met Rhett for the first time. I carried him into our bedroom and he saw Rhett. He could have cared less. He was unimpressed and just ready for his morning pouch. We've spent the weekend getting our stuff organized and trying to remember what it's like to have a newborn. I don't think Jack was ever this tiny. We still had to wait until Tuesday at 5pm for him to be officially ours (well, or for the bio parents not to change their minds). The Lord blessed us Tuesday with several friends that stopped by. That helped so much to make the day go by faster and take our minds off of everything. Tuesday, at 4pm I simply sat in the living room and held him. I stared at his face and little body. I wanted to soak it all in- I knew the Lord had called us to this again, but just in case it turned out differently than I expected- I wanted to remember every little detail of this little guy. Well, indeed they didn't change their minds and this is what the Lord had planned for our family. Welcome little Rhett Andrew to #williamspartyof4.
